WalkthroughThis quest can be obtained from Steffen in Gran Soren, immediately upon entering the city. Steffan can usually be found wandering around near the Fountain Square, as you head up towards the Wealthy District. He will be marked by a green quest icon.
Steffen will tell you about a magical grimoire written by the infamous sorcerer Salomet, and ask you to find it for him. Asking the shopkeep at the herb shop in Fountain Square will advance the quest, as she will inform you that the book was most likely taken by bandits. The specific group of bandits is the gang of all-female rogues that inhabit Heavenspeak Fort, in the mountain pass between Gran Soren and the Greatwall Encampment. In order to talk to Ophis, their leader, you must either be female, or in female disguise (this can be achieved by buying women's clothes from Mountebank at the Black Cat in the Venery of Gran Soren). All your pawns must be female in order to speak with Ophis, or dressed in women's clothes as well.
Note: It is not necessary to talk with Ophis in order to advance the quest. Killing her will also do it, and she respawns so there's no danger of getting rid of her permanently.
The information that you get from Ophis directs you to a man named Rowland, who can be found on the Manamia Trail between the Mountain Waycastle and the Encampment. He is being attacked by bandits, and you need to save him. If you fail, it's not disastrous, however - you can still get the grimoire even if he dies. He will just tell you it's specific location: Aernst Castle Ruins, in the Vestad Hills near the Witchwood. You can actually see the castle from the road above when you first enter the area. The bandits there will not automatically aggro, so you can take your time exploring the fort and gathering the considerable amount of loot inside. The grimoire is in a chest at the very top of the fort, which will require a bit of tricky platforming to reach.
Note: As you pass through the Vestad Hills, on your way to the fort, you will encounter a group of bandits, which can be quite hard to kill if you are at a low level. The easiest way to skip the bandits is by waiting till nightfall when they vanish.
Note: It is possible that the earlier steps of the quest can be skipped, and the grimoire will still be in the chest. However, this has not been confirmed and is merely speculation. (see next paragraph)
It has been confirmed that you can still find the grimoire in the chest without talking to Rowland or Ophis, the bandit leader says he has it when you approach. However, the chest will not appear until the quest has at least been started.
Return with the book to Steffen. You can have the book duplicated so you can use it yourself, but this is rather pointless considering that the book is a one time use, and casts the meteor spell that you can get as a sorcerer anyway.
- 15,000 Gold
- 8,000 XP
- 20 Rift Crystals
- In addition to the money, exp and Rift Crystal reward if you gave him the real Tome, later on in the game, in the quest Griffin's Bane, he will come during the battle with the Griffin and help you by casting the meteor spell at it. If you gave him the forgery, he will still come, but he won't be able to cast anything.
