Guard Duty is a quest available in Dragon's Dogma.
Objective[]
- "Madeleine the merchant seeks safe passage to the encampment. You hope to earn something worthy from this escort duty."
Escort Madeleine to The Encampment and try not to lose her.
Walkthrough[]
Madeleine outside Pablos' Inn
Guard Duty becomes available after defeating the Cyclops outside The Encampment during Call of the Arisen.
Once this prerequisite has been met, return to Cassardis and enter Pablos' Inn and Madeleine will be there, loudly talking to herself. Speak to her and she will ask to be escorted to the Encampment.
Simply follow the road to the Encampment and protect her from any Goblins in the area. Despite her safety concerns, Madeleine has a knack for wandering off to look at something that caught her eye, but will eventually continue ahead. She may do this several times so try not get too far ahead of her.
After arriving at the Encampment, Madeleine will ask for 1,000 Gold to enable her to continue her 'business'. She claims to need it to be able to travel to the capital and promises to eventually repay it, in the form of a small discount at her shop.
Giving her the money will raise her Affinity level. Before leaving her, the Arisen can buy or sell some goods. (see Madeleine's Shop for her inventory).

"Tis a shame monsters forced the mountain pass what leads there closed... We have the dragon to thank for that as well!
"I make for the encampment to speak with the guard captain, and learn when they will reopen the pass."
"True, there are other ways to the capital. Other paths... But enough idle chatter. We should move."
"Hold a moment. There's aught here..."
"Aha, gold! Now there's a fine treat!"
"No, no, no -- help!"
"Yes, he's all yours!"
Notes[]
- Madeleine will still sell items during the escort.
- Madeleine starts the trip outside Cassardis with less than full health.
- If this quest is missed, Madeleine will still be found in the Union Inn upon reaching Gran Soren.
- The journey will be a little safer during the day.
- Madeleine can be picked up and carried to the Encampment, but this will negatively impact her Affinity.
- If the party enters Dripstone Cave with mads in tow she will wait behind in Cassardis.
- ERROR!!! Exiting by the Manamia Trail entrance to the cave and returning along Seabreeze Trail will cause pawns to make comments at various points as if Madeleine is present (if the quest is set as primary). The same error occurs on returning to the trail with Madeleine deposited at the encampment (without the quest complete).
- Caution! This quest must be completed before completing Off With Its Head or else it will fail.
- The escort (or lack of it) does not affect Chasing Shadows, but must be completed for the later quest Bad Business to start.
- (Glitch) Sometimes Madeleine will not follow the party out of Cassardis - in this case just wait a few minutes for her.
Trivia[]
Ignoring Madeleine's escort request will result in her getting drunk at the ale house later. She may then be encountered staggering around the village.
