Magickal Gleam is a holy based skill available in Dragon's Dogma.

Description[]

"An advanced form of Magickal Flare that illuminates a broader area for a longer period of time."

A seeking magick holy bolt that brightly illuminates on discharge, also causing shock or damage to the Undead and other un-holy creatures. An advanced version of Magickal Flare which gives light for a longer period.

In Dark Arisen, it becomes Magickal Radiance with a suitable Magick Bowman's Ring or Magick Bowman's Band equipped.

Usage, damage and tactics[]

After casting the magick arrow can be released (press by assigned button) — the gleam bolt will 'explode' when the button is released, allowing control of distance. It will also explode if it hits a surface or foe.

The spell will target and seek a single foe.

Spell Duration Lighting

Magickal Flare 30s 16m 2m
Magickal Gleam 60s 16m 4m
Magickal Radiance 90s 24m 10m

Damage[]

A direct hit deals Holy based damage to non-living creatures such as the Undead, Skeletons, and Phantoms, but deals almost no damage to living foes.

The range of the holy blast is far less than the range of the illumination, but undead foes do not need to be directly hit to be damaged or knocked down. Direct hit damage is no better than a near explosion. Magickal Gleam has twice the flash radius of Magickal Flare.

Both Magickal Glare and Magickal Gleam have the same magick power. The spell has modest base power and scales quite weakly with total magick — this is usually mitigated by undead creatures' weakness to holy magick.

Foes affected by the spell will often be knocked down, though strong enemies like Skeleton Brutes can resist several shots before being affected.

Tactics[]

  • 'Sleeping' undead take multiplied damage when a 'sneak attack' is used with this skill, so it is a good idea to try a preemptive strike.
  • In order to gain a first strike advantage in a fight, it is ideal to use the initial light burst flinching effect by sending Pawns in just as the arrow is fired.
  • Magickal Gleam can be used to defeat Death using a knockdown exploit in the Fortress of Remembrance.

Notes[]

  • Larger undead that are not killed outright may be set on fire. This effect also triggers Stout Undead to begin popping time.
  • Only one flare can be active at a time.
  • The release mechanism is very similar to the Strider's Fracture Dart.
  • The initial flash of bright light burst can cause nearby enemies (and allies such as soldiers) to flinch.
  • Lesser undead within its flash radius succumb to AoE Knockdown, affording a few seconds reprieve vs swifter types, such as a squad of skeletons.
  • The maximum range, but not the targeting range, is increased by the augment Trajectory.
  • Pressing and releasing the assigned button quickly (i.e. "tapping") usually causes the bolt to fire to the maximum distance. Sometimes it will cause the bolt to explode immediately in front of the Arisen.
  • ERROR!!! Contrary to the description, Magickal Gleam does not illuminate a wider area than Magickal Flare. However Magickal Gleam is a bit brighter and does have a greatly improved damage radius.
